Periyakuruchi Limestone Mines

Challenge

Finding an alternative transport option for sweetener limestone across Tamil Nadu.

Solution

In 1993 when we took up the raising contract for the Periyakuruchi Limestone Mines, Dist. Ariyulur, Tamil Nadu, we successfully completed the mining activity. However, due to poor road conditions, we could not transport the sweetener limestone to other parts of the state. This posed a major problem to the operation, with production stalling indefinitely.

We thought of an innovative solution. We spoke to the Indian Railway and Southern Railway, and requested them to give us all the wagons from an old metre gauge line that had recently been converted to a broad gauge, and was hence redundant. We proceeded to load the wagons and transport the limestone using the metre gauge line, and then a broad gauge from Trichy onwards.

Benefit

We presented an economically viable alternate transportation solution for a project that had been deemed irredeemable before our intervention, having been stalled for two years prior.
